The UH-1 Huey started its life as the XH-40. When adapted by the Army with its 2-letter designation, it became the HU-1, which stood for "Helicopter Utility" and thus received the nickname "Huey". The Department of Defense then reversed the designation to UH-1. The unofficial name, "Huey", was so popular that the AH-1 attack version was officially renamed to the Huey Cobra.
